Tonic water is a carbonated drink which consists of quinine as a major content. Tonic water contains many ingredients, including sweeteners, herbs and spices, but a major ingredient is quinine. Quinine comes from the South American chincona tree. Quinine was originally used for preventing and curing malaria, babesiosis and other diseases. Tonic water was initially used as a palatable way to consume quinine medicine but has gained popularity as a drink mixer for making gin cocktails.
Quinine is no longer used as the primary medication for malaria due to the emergence of other treatment options and drugs but is included in the WHO list of essential medicines. Medicinal tonic water originally contained only carbonated water and a large content of quinine. Though, currently most tonic water contains less quinine and is used mostly for its flavor. As a result of the lower quinine content, it is less bitter, and is also usually sweetened, often with high-fructose corn syrup or sugar. Traditional tonic water contains added sugar, while diet tonic water contains natural sweeteners. The main benefit of consuming tonic water is to provide rehydration from drinking water.
