In order to avoid any physical impacts, such as unwanted burns, a dispersive electrode, that has a relatively large surface area, is placed on the patient and allows the high frequency current to flow back with a low current intensity. Dispersive electrode designs and varieties have evolved along with electrosurgery over time. A solid pad, initially a stainless steel plate, was the sole means available in the early days of electrosurgery for dispersing the heat from the radiofrequency radiation applied to the patient. The ESU would continue sending energy to the tissue if the solid plate was not placed properly or started to move off the patient during the procedure, which might be harmful. The capacity to detect the tissue impedance at the patient plate was made possible by technological advances. The ESU will stop delivering energy and emit an audible alarm to alert the medical staff if the patient's plate is not applied correctly or if it begins to come off during the case.
