- Integration with Growing 5G Infrastructure –Several major businesses and governmental agencies are considering 5G private networks in addition to public 5G networks. In response to this growing requirement for in-building 5G services, manufacturers are improving their distribution systems. For instance, in July 2021, Comba Telecom Systems Holdings Limited announced that its subsidiary Comba Network Systems Company Limited had successfully launched the ComFlex Pro Solution for 3 Hong Kong, to assist the operator in expanding and deepening its 5G indoor network coverage.
- Increasing Government Investments in DAS – The government worldwide is investing in DAS extensively since a well-connected digital infrastructure in any country is estimated to influence economic growth and attract a multitude of investments. For instance, In July 2021, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (‘ADIA’) acquired a significant minority stake in a digital infrastructure platform EdgePoint Infrastructure which is focused on developing, acquiring, and operating distributed antenna systems and telecommunication towers in Southeast Asia. ADIA planned to invest USD 500 million in EdgePoint to bolster the growth of the platform in the future.
- Increasing Demand from Several End-Users – The increasing demand from a plethora of end-users including commercial buildings and offices, transportation hubs, educational institutions, and several others drive the demand of DAS globally. For instance, in December 2022, Cellnex, an independent wireless telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructure operator was awarded six projects to enhance 5G infrastructure along transport corridors between Portugal, Spain and France. To achieve this, Cellnex announced its plan to deploy 34 new telecommunication sites (including distributed antenna systems –DAS—in tunnels). The projects will represent an overall investment of USD 25.75 million, 50% of which will be financed by the European Commission.
Challenges
- High DAS Solution Deployment Costs - The challenging part is selecting the appropriate system (active or passive DAS) and considering the wide price ranges of DAS systems. Deployment of an active DAS can cost millions of dollars and is quite expensive. A multi-carrier active DAS system starts at USD 5 and can cost up to USD 10 per square foot. This covers the cost of the deployment, specialized equipment, and fiber-optic cable prices. Due to its high cost and complicated infrastructure requirements, active DAS isn't as popular as passive DAS.
