Recent Trends and Developments in the Market
Baxter International Inc. recently announced the clinical trial for a peritoneal dialysis solution system that aims to improve the experience of home dialysis and simplify therapy management. The announcement, made on January 7, 2019, states that the system is designed to make small batches of peritoneal dialysis solutions on demand at the patient’s home, thereby improving the patient experience and eliminating the need for heavy boxed containing the PD solutions. The company received FDA approval for the same as well.
Introduction to Dialysis Devices
The most effective treatment for chronic kidney failure is kidney transplantation. However, the shortage of donor organs gives rise to the demand for alternative methods. Dialysis is one such alternate treatment method for chronic kidney failure in either one or both the kidneys. Dialysis devices are especially used for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), a condition in which both the kidneys of the patient completely cease to work. This raises the demand for artificially made products that actively and effectively filter blood, mimicking the metabolic process exhibited by a real kidney.
Market Size and Forecast
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2019, around 125,000 people in the United States had begun treatment for end-stage kidney disease in 2016. Further, more than 726,000 people were either on dialysis or were living with a kidney transplant. The dialysis device market is anticipated to record a CAGR of around 5% over the forecast period, i.e., 2019-2027. The market is segmented by product, by end user and by region, out of which, the product segment is further bifurcated into hemodialysis devices and peritoneal dialysis devices segments. Based on product, the hemodialysis devices segment is anticipated to hold the largest share in the dialysis device market on account of higher availability of this form of dialysis. Since this is the most common method of kidney failure treatment, it is largely preferred by patients. On the other hand, the peritoneal dialysis devices segment is anticipated to grow at the highest rate during the forecast period as a result of better patient outcomes as well as peritoneal dialysis being a more cost-effective procedure as compared to hemodialysis. Growth Drivers
Growing Incidences of Diabetes and Hypertension to Propel the Growth of the Market
The United States Renal Data System, a national database for the United States that collects, studies and distributes information about the two main kidney disorders, namely chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). According to USRDS, the prevalence of CKD in its early stages was around 15% among adults in 2018. This means that more than 30 million Americans might be suffering from the disorder, while a greater number of people might be at risk as well. The rising cases of health disorders that affect the kidney such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and hypertension result in the demand for dialysis procedures that eliminate the need for kidney transplantations and other such complex procedures.
Rising Geriatric Population to Drive the Market Growth
Increasing elderly population across the world is another growth driving factor for the dialysis device market as with growing age, the organs begin to degenerate, thereby requiring external aid in order to continue regular functioning of the body. As per the 2016 estimates from CDC, chronic kidney disorders are highly common in adults above the age of 65 with a 38% prevalence. Moreover, only 13% of people aged between 45 and 64 and 7% of people between the ages 18 and 44 had a risk of developing CKD.
Restraints
Health Risks and Complications Associated With Dialysis to Hamper the Market Growth
Various side-effects of dialysis include anemia, low blood pressure, blood infection and others. These health issues, along with other complications such as strict government regulatory policies for the approval of dialysis equipment, are the main factors estimated to limit the market growth during the forecast period.
