Biomedical waste or biohazard waste is any waste that contains infectious materials and is generated from the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases. The infectious substances could be human bodily fluids, microbiological, pathological, animal waste, sharps, human/animal tissue, used bandages and dressings, discarded gloves, and other. Bio Hazard bags are created to collect and dispose of this waste.
Bio hazard bags are labeled, colored, and marked separately for different types of hospital waste, as per the healthcare standards. On top of the high health risks associated with poor management of medical waste, it can negatively impact the environment and there are substantial risks of pollution of water, air, and soil.
According to WHO, poor management of bio waste (used needles & syringes, soiled dressings, body parts, diagnostic samples, blood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and radioactive materials) potentially uncover patients, healthcare workers, waste handlers and community at large to toxic effects, infection and injuries.
For sharps such as needles, surgical tools, and other contaminated metal items, bags are generally made from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) material. According to FDA guidelines, all sharps disposal containers should be made of heavy-duty plastic, able to close with a tight-fitting puncture-resistant lid, upright and stable during use, leak-resistant, and accurately labeled to warn of hazardous waste inside the container.
