Disinfection is used to kill microorganisms, while antisepsis is used to reduce the number of microorganisms present on surfaces. Sterilisation is the complete removal of all living organisms, and other methods such as fumigation and chemical treatments are used to reduce the number of microorganisms present in an environment.

Additionally, it helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, especially in healthcare settings where the number of people in close contact is high.
